Death At Sea & HRAS International
"Death at Sea" is a 2024 documentary directed by Sara Pipernos that investigates the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of fisheries observer Eritara Aati Kaierua in March 2020. The film features insights from Eritara's wife, Tekarara Kabangaki, and his sister, Nicky Kaierua, shedding light on the risks faced by fisheries observers and the challenges their families encounter in the event of tragedies. The documentary aims to raise awareness and advocate for policy reforms to enhance protections for observers working on commercial fishing vessels.
Our Justice Campaign Eritara Aati Kaierua died in March 2020 while working onboard a Taiwanese flagged commercial fishing vessel FV WIN FAR 636 as a fisheries observer. Four years on, his family are still searching for answers to his unexplained death at sea. The investigation into Eritara’s death by Kiribati authorities was fraught with inconsistencies and, to this day, Eritara’s family has yet to receive official worker compensation. Through our justice campaign, we aim to change these circumstances through concerted advocacy and legal advisory support, alongside wide-ranging international awareness raising.
